Advantages:

No side-shifting stem = less maintenance required

Disadvantages

Long press frame = long tie rods = more cyclical elongation = more movement of the die = more strain on frame

Long stroke = long dead cycle time

Billet loader and container damage possible

Block lubrication & stem changing at press C/L

Loading with stem = possibility of mushroom

Short press frame = short tie rods = less cyclical elongation = better die positioning = less strain on frame

Possibility of longer billet

Short stroke = short dead cycle time

Block & stem maintenance out of press C/L

Loading with electric pusher = no possibility of container damage or mushroom

No billet to container friction

Disadvantages
Short - Stroke = slightly more maintenance
